North American graduate students seek loans to fund study abroad
The latest research from QS, the London based team behind www.topgraduate.com and the QS World Grad School Tour, indicates that North American students are for more likely to seek loans rather than scholarships to fund their Graduate School study far more often than students from Asia, Europe and Latin America.
The research demonstrates that North American students are much less likely to seek a scholarship for their international graduate studies but are more willing to apply for commercial loans than their European and Asian counterparts. Similarly, North American students are much less likely to ask for financial help from parents and other regional groups of students.

The QS Graduate Applicant Research 2007, an annual survey of 4,000 prospective graduate students in more than 25 countries, provides a unique snapshot on the habits of those applying for masters and PhD programs this year. Tim Rogers, author of the report comments: “The number of North American applicants willing to invest their own money in Graduate School is far higher than in other countries. There is a greater understanding of the value of the return of investment by North American students represented by both masters and PhD degrees.”
With international graduate programs being amongst the most expensive of all study abroad experiences, funding is often the most critical issue for those researching where they will study in the future. Peter MacDonald, Director of the QS World Grad School Tour offers this note of support: “The events held in New York, Boston and Toronto In September will all offer potential students with advice on scholarships, financial aid and loans including $1.9 million in exclusive scholarships for those students that attend one of our three events.”
North American students will have the opportunity to access unique information on international scholarships and other funding opportunities later this month. The QS World Grad School Tour will visit New York (September 16), Boston (September 20) and Toronto (September 23) and bring with it more than 45 US and international graduate schools.
