iPhone App provides students with alternative to Clearing

For immediate release,11/08/2010, London

•     Up to 170,000* students likely to miss out on university in 2010
•     iPhone App helps students compare over 500 top universities in the world, providing an alternative to Clearing

It is estimated that up to 170,000* students will miss out on a place at university as record numbers applied and cap on places is enforced. Those concerned with their chances of securing a university place and the potential tuition fee increase in the UK can compare information such as fees of universities around the world and avoid Clearing by using the QS World University Rankings®, now available as an iPhone App.

QS World University Rankings® iPhone App profiles over 500 of the world’s top universities and allows users to compare multiple universities and fees whilst on-the-go. Universities around the world update their profiles regularly, ensuring that the information available is always up-to-date. With the potential rise of UK university tuition fees and Clearing likely to be extremely competitive, the QS World University Rankings® iPhone App can help students and parents consider more affordable, high quality study options abroad.

Ben Sowter, head of the QS Intelligence Unit, the research team behind the QS World University Rankings® says, “With government funding for higher education being cut, it seems inevitable that fees will increase, this is likely to lead to students demanding improved services from their universities and to consider competitive options in other countries. What is clear is that students and parents need to be up to speed on fee levels not only in their own country but elsewhere too, in order to make informed decisions.”

As UK students are eligible to study anywhere in the EU using the same student loan available in the UK, Tim Rogers, an internationally recognised expert on higher education trends suggests students should look away from the country for their university choices.

"The use of the English language in undergraduate and graduate degree programmes is now common throughout Europe. With high-quality, internationally respected qualifications on offer - coupled with fees ranging from €1,500 to €3,500 - countries such as Denmark, The Netherlands, France and Switzerland provide an excellent alternative to the UK system.  Further afield, countries like Australia and New Zealand offer excellent degree programmes recognised by employers all over the world, with tuition fees far lower than their US or UK counterparts." Said Rogers.
