Interest in study abroad remains high amongst North American graduate students

The interest in study abroad for masters and PhD studies from North American remains buoyant, according to QS, the London based team behind www.topgraduate.com and the QS World Grad School Tour, the world’s largest series of international graduate school education fairs.

Peter MacDonald, Director of the QS World Grad School Tour comments: “North American graduate students remain amongst the most mobile of all students according to our research, with very clear reasons for wishing to study abroad.  Our 2007 Graduate Applicant Research indicates that North American students choose to study abroad for two main reasons – to improve career prospects and to learn new skills.”

In more detail, the QS Graduate Applicant Research, an annual survey of more than 4,000 prospective graduate students worldwide, lists the order of importance of the reasons that motivate North American students to study graduate programs internationally:

Marie Field, an alumna from the London School of Economics (LSE) recalls her reasons for leaving Canada to study internationally: “I chose to study in the UK to attend a specific university with a brilliant reputation for academic excellence and high percentage of international students.  Of course, I also wanted to experience life in one of the world's most exciting and diverse urban centres.

North American students will have the opportunity to learn firsthand about graduate programs later this month.  The QS World Grad School Tour will visit New York (September 16), Boston (September 20) and Toronto (September 23) and bring with it more than 45 US and international graduate schools, including Columbia, University of California San Diego, Carnegie Mellon University, University College London, Kings College London, the University of Melbourne, Queensland University of Technology and Bocconi University and others from Spain, Italy and The Netherlands.
