European graduate students seek scholarships to fund study abroad
The latest research from QS, the London based team behind www.topgraduate.com and the QS World Grad School Tour, indicates that European students are for more likely to seek scholarships as opposed to the loans favoured by their North American counterparts.
The research demonstrates that European students are much more likely to seek a scholarship for their international graduate studies but are much less willing to apply for commercial loans than their North American and Asian counterparts. Additionally, European students are much more likely to ask for financial help from parents for their graduate studies than regional groups of students.
| Method of funding graduate studies | European applicants | North American applicants | Asian applicants |
| Scholarships | 53.1% | 34.3% | 57.7% |
| Loan | 15.2% | 37% | 16.8% |
| Savings | 12.3% | 15.2% | 8.8% |
| Parents & family | 12.4% | 5.6% | 11.2% |
| Company sponsorship | 5.1% | 6.8% | 4.0% |
| Other | 1.9% | 1.1% | 1.5% |

The QS Graduate Applicant Research 2007, an annual survey of 4,000 prospective graduate students in more than 25 countries, provides a unique snapshot on the habits of those applying for masters and PhD programs this year. Tim Rogers, author of the report comments: “It is clear from this research that prospective European graduate students continue to offset some of their study costs through traditional scholarships. However, with 47% of European students seeking other forms of funding, it seems that the value of a graduate degree is sufficiently compelling to at least consider paying for it yourself.”
With international graduate programs being amongst the most expensive of all study abroad experiences, funding is often the most critical issue for those researching where they will study in the future. Peter MacDonald, Director of the QS World Grad School Tour offers this note of support: “The events held in Europe will all offer students advice on scholarships and loans, including $1.9 million in exclusive scholarships for students that attend one of our European education fairs.”
The QS World Grad School Tour will visit Moscow (October 9), Kiev (October 11), London (October 13), Milan (October 15), Madrid (October 18), Frankfurt (October 20), Cologne (October 23), Munich (October 25), Paris (October 27), Thessaloniki (October 30), Athens (October 31) and Istanbul (November 3) and bring with it more than 40 US and international graduate schools, including Columbia, University of California San Diego, Carnegie Mellon University, University College London, Kings College London, the University of Melbourne, Queensland University of Technology and Bocconi University and others from Spain, Italy and The Netherlands.
