New research intelligence unit launched

Business schools and universities looking to develop effective recruitment strategies now have an additional resource they can call on. The QS Intelligence Unit, home to the QS World University Rankings, is a new department of QS Quacquarelli Symonds Ltd. It offers a number of research initiatives targeted at providing invaluable information to higher education institutes.

Lead by Ben Sowter, QS Head of Research, the Intelligence Unit (QSIU) focuses on university rankings, most notably the World University Rankings in conjunction with the Times Higher.  In 2009, the QSIU will also release the first-ever Asian University Rankings. QS has partnered with The Chosum Ilbo, one of South Korea’s major newspapers, to publish the rankings of the top 200 Asian Universities in Korea. Further partnerships in Asia are due to be confirmed later this year.

QS has been conducting research in a range of areas since 1990 and expertise in this area will be developed through the QSIU. Other research solutions which will provide business schools, universities and employers with market research, essential to developing effective recruitment strategies, include

• The QS Global 200 Business Schools 2009: The Employers’ Choice features a definitive list of business schools that attract the most international recruiters and identifies the most popular schools in each region of the world. The research is targeted to the international mobile MBA recruiter and institutions worldwide, interested in international business education and recruitment trends. The report captures recruiters’ reviews of business schools and is an important tool for admissions staff and careers advisors in setting objectives and measuring performance.

• The TopMBA Recruitment and Salary Report is an annual survey of MBA employers worldwide which determines the trends in international salaries and recruitment. This extensive survey, responses are received from more than 400 companies, presents an unrivalled overview of the world MBA recruitment market. MBA program administrators and career services will find the survey invaluable for providing guidance to students and managing relationships with recruiters.

• The TopMBA Applicants Research Report provides a detailed insight into the status, attitudes, goals and ambitions of MBA applicants worldwide, on an annual basis, and how they and the employment/education market for young professionals is changing. This allows precious insight into the changing trends of worldwide MBA applicants. The report also gives a global overview of MBA applicant trends, providing vital data to business school marketers to identify growing markets and setting effective strategies.

• The TopGradSchool Applicants Research Report provides similar data to the MBA Applicants Research Report, however it focuses on the broader area of postgraduate education applicant trends. This report is of more interest to university staff that work outside of the MBA market.

The QS Intelligence Unit was set up in 2008 in response to the increasing public interest for comparative data on universities and organizations.

Sowter said they had seen a growing demand for institutions to develop deeper insight into their competitive environment.

“As a distinct and autonomous department, the QSIU is committed to the key values of rigorous integrity, undeniable value and charismatic presentation. With staff in both London and Singapore, QSIU strives to be the most trusted independent source of global intelligence on the higher education sector,” he said.
